Five

Our Girl Bear turned five this weekend. We celebrated twice, with a family dinner on Friday night (she chose to eat at Red Robin) and a party with friends and the Bear's parents on Saturday. Both events were lots of fun and she had a wonderful time. Her birthday party was well-attended, with nine little friends and their assorted family members partaking. My mother-in-law gave her a beautiful crocheted shawlette. She's so excited for cold weather now.

I love to throw birthday parties; we did a craft project (simple scarecrow faces with peel-and-stick parts, from a kit), we played outside on the backyard swingset and we ate snacks and cake. I made nacho dip from Velveeta and Ro-Tel canned tomatoes with chiles (you know the one), and we also had cut fruit, veggies with dip, Chex Mix and jellybeans. The GB planned the menu, thank you very much. I did not bake the cake myself, it's from Costco. But it's huge and delicious and it went over beautifully. I made up the favor bags earlier in the week; they included silly straws, rings with huge fake jewels, mini bubble bottles and candy, of course. I made the bunting myself, last year; reusable bunting is the best kind, I think. Pink, green and red are my go-to girly-party colors. The GB was the belle of the ball, happy and cheerful and a very gracious hostess.

It's hard to believe she's five. She was my "high-needs" baby. She was early and small. She had gastric reflux and cried, screamed, writhed and vomited constantly as an infant. I cried right along with her sometimes. We nursed ten, twenty, thirty times a day. If she'd been my first baby, I don't know how I would have managed. Experience helped a lot. I wore her in a sling and co-slept with her, just to help her stay calm and happy. She needed much more from me than her brother ever did, and while it was stressful, I believe it created a very special bond between us. I wore her in a carrier on my back after she outgrew the sling because she needed touch and closeness to stay calm, all the way through the toddler years. She was challenging, but she was sweet and affectionate. She's my best girl.

Five is, by turns, loving and moody. Five is loud drumming and piano-banging and a tiny black-and-red bicycle with a hornet depicted on the seat. Five is pretending for hours, sleeping with a favorite baby doll since infancy. Five is cooking and baking and learning how to sew. Five is still having the occasional tantrum. Five is preschool. Five is reading fluently but still needs an afternoon rest. Five is hairclips and bows, wearing dresses as often as possible. Five is mostly felicitous. Five will be an adventure.

  3. Darling colorful, fun pictures! I love it when they chose their own places to celebrate at age 5 - Red Robin! Wait until they're 18 and you wish you could take back making the offer after you're looking at a 5 star restaurant for a dozen guests! (Yes, it did happen to me!)

  13. A very beautiful and memorable post. Happy birthday to the special GB and may 5 bring everything alive, and bring her many many happy smiles. The day looked bright and beautiful and perfect for five year olds to enjoy. The food sounded delicious, so wish I was there (yum!). I completely share the strain that comes with gastro reflux and feeding all day every day for the first year, screaming every hour not feeding and not being able to sleep, the slings (front and back) and most of all the tears. It's a tough one for your first one, but yes it brings a very special bond. Sending you much love xoxo

  29. Oh, five is so special! Our little granddaughter just turned five a couple of weeks ago. She is loving kindergarten, and even got to be on tv yesterday with her daddy when he was sharing how to serve healthy meals and snacks for your children. I just love how bright and full of hope and happiness young children are. Now, if we could just fix whatever it is that happens to them when they become teenagers....lol!
