52 Weeks of Happy - 47/52

Joining in with Jen, here are four happy photos from the past week.

I saved myself money and a trip to the shoe store. The velcro in the GB's sneaker wouldn't stay closed anymore. She was constantly walking out of her shoe. I decided to try fixing it myself, by sewing some velcro tape right over the old stuff (the loopy side onto the strap, the hook side onto the shoe). I needed to use a thimble to get the needle through all the layers. Now the shoe's closure is good as new.

The GB and I had a tea party. It was a long week because the Bear was away, the weather was not very good and I had low-level cold symptoms which never amounted to much but annoyed the heck out of me for days. She suggested the tea party; she knows how much her mother loves tea.

Oh, you know, the children just lie peacefully under a blanket together all day long. Yeah, sure. But they were doing it very nicely this particular day, when they dragged afghans into the GB's room to play "camping" on her bed. The game mostly seemed to consist of lying under the blanket but they enjoyed themselves, with hardly any squabbling.

I've broken out the slipper-socks. I've had them for years and they're so warm and comfortable. I often put on leggings when I get home because they're much comfier for lounging in, and I love the way I can pull up my slipper socks right over them. No part of my leg can get cold this way, which is completely happy-making.

Hello and welcome, new readers and followers! I'm really glad you're here. Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday. We had such a nice weekend. It did snow on Saturday night; we had about an inch, I think. That isn't much but it was enough for snowballs in the morning. We spent Sunday at home, with a nice fire again, and I puttered, crocheted and roasted a chicken. It snowed Sunday night too, another half-inch or so. Today, I'm getting last-minute things done for Thanksgiving later in the week. It will just be the four of us at home, nice and quiet, but I love cooking for this holiday. I've read somewhere that Thanksgiving is "the Super Bowl for home cooks" and I think it may be true. Though I love cooking for the Super Bowl too...

I want to say a special thank you to two of my blogging friends who took the time to request my address so that they could send birthday cards to me in the mail. Linda of Woke Up, Got Out of Bed... and Gillian of Tales From a Happy House both sent me beautiful birthday cards with lovely messages written inside. I was very touched to receive these cards, from two countries other than my own. They really satisfied my desires for mail from distant places! As always, I am thrilled and humbled by the kindness of this community which has welcomed me with open arms over the past year. My birthday was made all the more special by the comments, wishes and cards from you lovely people.

  2. Lovely, happy things. You made me laugh about the children squabbling. I used to ask my hubby why the kids just wouldn't get on together and play nice, his reply was always that siblings always squabble. They're still at it even though they're now 18 and 15, though they do get on well sometimes too, it's great when they do. Those slipper socks are great, I hate to be cold.

  5. Happy Belated Birthday Jennifer! It sounds like you had a perfect day with the family :) We had some snow on the weekend too, but the bitter wind blew it away and nothing stayed on the ground. I used to sew those Velcro straps back together too ... often just pulling all the fluff & stuff off the Velcro made them "stick" again. I'm with you on the comfort thing, and your slipper socks & leggings sound perfect for lounging ;) Enjoy your week! Wendy x

  6. Jennifer,

What will we do when the happy series comes to an end? I will miss seeing your weekly happy round up. I always find your happies so refreshingly honest, if that makes any sense. And I am also feeling terribly guilty for not thinking of requesting your address in order to post a card. I love finding cards to match the recipient, and I know of your love of post from far off places.
How about a Christmas card? If you'd like to email me your address, I'll get right on it! (paxton3@sky.com)

Have a great week in those slipper socks of yours. It's the time of year for pjs by 4pm in this house. I always welcome it!!

  7. Such beautiful pictures with those bright, vivid colors that you are known for!
This post reminded me of dragging out blankets and pillows and making up a "camp" on our living room floor with my sisters. When my daughters were young, they snuggled up in sleeping bags - each with her own cat! - and I'd read chapters of books like "The Secret Garden" and "Wizard of Oz." Something about camping out like that seems to transcend the ages!

  8. Hello my friend. You sure got lots of nice birthday wishes! I loved the shot of the kids wrapped up in all your colorful crochet. I'm still plugging away on Caleb's blanket. I'm fighting a cold too.. and trying to decide if I dare go swimming today. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  10. I need some slipper socks! I'm freezing here and my feet don't warm up.
I thought of you yesterday. A friend crocheted me a beautiful afghan for my birthday and it made me think of you and the blankets you've crocheted.

  15. I like warm feet and leggings at home too. Clever you fixing that shoe, so satisfying to do that, rather than having to buy more. Sorry your week has been long, I do hope you're feeling 100% now. I've got so many pictures of mine all sat together playing nicely, you would think it's a regular thing. Alas mosly it's not that regular - which is probably why I take photos when it happens! Hope this week is a good one for you Jennifer.

  18. How sweet your little girl is for having a tea party with her mom. I agree that there is nothing better on a cold day than to stay home in yoga or pajama pants (and those warm slipper socks!), sipping a warm beverage and maybe have your nose in a good book or be watching a movie. Unfortunately, my cold day today has consisted of going out for physical therapy and now I'm getting ready to leave again for yoga class! I'm "in love" with that rippled afghan...I'd like to play camping with it too. :-)

  29. Some lovely happies and well done for saving those trainers! A job well done! Those slippers looks upper comfy. I suffer from bad circulation so my feet are always freezing, you need to see how many layers I wear at home, its ridiculous! Pleased to hear that you enjoyed the snow and I hope that you have shaken the cold and that your Thanks Giving prep goes as planned. xoxo
