A Friday

6:30 AM - I wake up, shower and get dressed. I always make my bed as soon as I'm out of it. Making my bed gives me a lot of pleasure, as does neatening my nightstand and dresser. A tidy bedroom helps me feel ready for the day.

7:15 AM - the small Bears are dressed and eating their breakfast - today, Cheerios and bananas with a side of yogurt.

8:45 AM - the Bear has already taken the LB to school and come home. Now, it's time to take the GB to preschool.

9:30 AM - It happens to be "private Friday," so the Bear and I stop for coffee (and a slice of cake to share). I have a skinny latte with one packet of Sugar in the Raw and a sprinkle of cocoa on top - I'm doing pretty well with my new reduced-sugar plan. I love having coffee with him. We chat, laugh and plot the rest of our morning date.

10:00 AM - After coffee, we go across the street to a thrift shop. I find this lovely divided ceramic plate with roosters for only $2. I buy it, along with a skinny plain glass vase, also $2 and perfect for a  few long-stemmed flowers.

After thrifting, we walk to a nearby music shop and look at guitars. We do not buy any guitars.

Next, we visit a butcher shop. We marvel at the many varieties of meat available, but we do not buy any meat.

10:45 AM - we drive to one of our favorite stores, World Market. We do not buy anything this time, in the absence of coupons or shopper rewards. We examine composting containers, and we laugh at a weird birdcage-like lamp. We consider placing some carved stone birds inside the lamp, but we do not wish to be banned from World Market.

11:45 AM - we drive to the LB's school to pick him up. He negotiates his way out of wearing his coat because he is cute, it's relatively warm out, and I had been missing him.

12:15 PM - after picking up the GB, we announce that we are going to take them out for lunch. They are delighted. We eat sandwiches and chips. They chatter about school. The proprietor gives them free cookies.

1:15 PM - we go home. Soon, I leave again because I have plans for a haircut and some shopping (the Walmart kind - food, soap, toilet paper - not the fun kind we did this morning). I'm back by 3:15 and I put away my purchases.

3:30 PM - I head to the garage to see what the Bears are up to. They've been out here since before I came home. The LB is hard at work on a construction project, the GB is twirling about the xeriscaping and the Bear is supervising while pruning a plum tree. Busy Bears.

I show off my new hairstyle, which is a lot like my previous hairstyle. I had two inches trimmed off the ends. I'd let it air-dry and by now it was wind-blown, and I'd already put it in a clip to keep it off my face, but it's fresh and I'm happy.

3:45 PM - A package delivery! It's some of my new yarn, which I ordered last week. It's nothing fancy, just Caron Simply Soft, but I'm excited because I have a new crochet project planned. It's a gift for my in-laws.

I also stop to admire my new thrift-shop purchases. The vase is simple but handy and the plate is totally rooster-ific!

I bought a $5 jar candle at Walmart, "cherry blossom" scent. I put it in the living room and it's really nice, a pretty color and surprisingly delicate fragrance. I love having a new candle, it's one of my favorite simple pleasures.

4:45 PM - the Bears come inside because it's getting very windy. The small ones play a computer game together, mostly in peace, while we discuss the tree-pruning.

I go outside for a few minutes to have a look around the backyard and I notice that the mountain is looking hazy because of blowing dust in the air.

5:30 PM - time to make dinner, with help from hard cider. I bought a Boboli pizza crust at Walmart when I shopped this afternoon and we're having our usual - mushroom and black olive. This is an exceedingly easy dinner. I realize that I made it through the whole day without really cooking! Go me.

6:30 PM - clean-up, storytime and daily sticker charts; pajamas, washing and tooth-brushing. Soon, tucking-in, hugs and kisses and goodnights.

8:00 PM - the Bear and I unwind. We relax and watch TV (mainly Sherlock on Netflix). We eat microwave popcorn and drink herbal tea. We reflect on our day; we got some things done and we enjoyed ourselves too. We had a delightful morning date and fun with our children. We concur that life is wonderful. I think I'm pretty lucky, and I tell him so.

  1. I think you had the best day and I'm glad you shared it with us. I really enjoyed this post. (We are also loving Sherlock very much here). Great thrift-shop purchases, and that view of your mountain - wow. Our day today has been very like your Friday: happy-busy, pottering, pizza for tea; now the kids have just gone to bed and it's Homeland on lovefilm and a beer.

  5. Sounds like a lovely day. Marc took the day off on Friday. It was unexpected and a real treat. We were kiddy free too, so went for a lovely walk pn the beach, food shopping (Marc bought a coat) and then washing machine shopping (ours has spun it's terminal load). It was so good to have some couple time. We rarely (never) get it. I looooooove your Rooster plate. I have thrift shop envy. And I have really enjoyed this snap shot of your day. I am a huge Sherlock fan. Sunday night is Sherlock night in this house!

  14. It sounds like a lovely day Jennifer. I bet that keeping a track of what you did you discovered that you do more than you realise. Your rooster plate is very pretty! Will you use it for display? I laughed about putting the birds in the cage, that is the sort of thing that my hubby and I would laugh about doing. Those horses that I assume were at World Market are amazing aren't they, probably not very practical, but pretty! Thank you for sharing your lovely day with us! xx

  15. "Lovely" is the word that came to mind as I read, and I see that nearly all of the above comments have used that word to describe your post! You are so smart to reserve your Friday mornings for "date time." Not too many people have that luxury, and if they have the time, they just don't think of doing it, preferring, I guess, like I did, to use the time catching up on other things - things that probably could wait. Our "date night" was, and still is - Friday - but many times when the kids were young I fell asleep right in the middle of it!

  25. I love this post, what you consider a lovely but relatively routine day is probably a great inspiration for others! I'm so glad that there are others, like you, who take the time to have couple time with hubby, still chat and laugh together - I find it makes us better parents, we enjoy each other then also appreciate our family, too. May you have many, many more days like this! :-) Chrissie x

  27. Ahhhh... Looks like the perfect day to me... I really like that ceramic plate you bought.
And you reminded me about World Market... ooooo love that store, so can't afford that store right now! So I better stay out of it!
I have considered doing a blog about a day in the life of a TA, I think I would have to have permission from my Principal though and I would not be allowed to show any faces of students, so I'd have to get very creative in what I take photos of.
I hope you have a wonderful week,
    Much love,
    Tammy
