Saturday afternoon

It's spring and we're loving it! This afternoon was beautiful and we spent most of it outdoors. We did weeding and pruning in the front yard and played in the backyard when we were done. We introduced the chickens to their coop earlier this week and they've been spending most of the day in there, coming indoors to their brooder at night where it's warmer for them. Soon, they'll move out to the coop permanently. In the meantime, we've enjoyed watching them acclimate to the coop, and we let them walk around in the yard a little bit too. They're a great addition to our family. I have to admit that I'm eager to have them in the coop full-time now that they're bigger (and stinkier), but the process of raising them from chicks has been interesting and fun for all of us.

We sat on the patio for hours after we finished the yard work. This is where you'll find us on weekend afternoons, in all but the hottest and coldest weather. The small Bears play and the big one and I relax. He played the guitar and I crocheted, making a few more circles for the GB's blanket. He made us margaritas, our first of the spring season. It's one of our favorite warm-weather drinks. Some friends stopped by to borrow a tool and checked out the chickens. Their kids are a few years older than ours but they were just as excited about the birds. I made a lazy dinner of corn dogs and tater tots for the small Bears and later, after they went to bed, the Bear and I had a typical "date night" dinner of soup, olives and bread. Vanilla ice cream is still forthcoming. We're watching Top Gear on Netflix. I think I'll pick the next show when it's over. I have my eye on a documentary featuring my beloved Stevie Nicks.

Saturday afternoon is my favorite time of the whole week. We always get things done in the early part of the afternoon (the yard looks beautiful right now; seriously, we worked our butts off and it looks like professional gardeners were here). Then we kick back and relax. There's nowhere to go, nothing pressing to do. It's the one time in the week when I really feel like having a drink, so I usually do. We look forward to eating alone and watching a movie or TV shows later on. When the weather is good, we spend a lot of time in the yard. I don't want to be anywhere else on Saturday afternoon. I look forward to this time all week. My favorite place, my favorite people.

Our Margaritas

2 oz. Cointreau
1.5 oz. simple syrup
1.5 oz. tequila (we like Cuervo Gold)
2 oz. lime juice

Combine all ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice, shake vigorously and serve in salt-rimmed glasses. Above measurements are for one serving.

  2. Such a wonderful way to spend your Saturday. Ours was still cold and windy so I did my knitting inside in my easy chair. :-). Your chicks have become chickens before our eyes! What a great learning experience for your children. I enjoyed the picture of your husband with his guitar. Perfect. There is never enough music in the world.
    Blessings,

  4. Sounds a perfect way to spend the day. Your photos are great. Make the most of your easy Saturday afternoons. I've found as Matt has got older he has more of a call on our time. Still all together but not quite the same as just being at home and enjoying your surroundings. Have a great Sunday. It's Mothers Day here, so the boys are cooking later. :) x

  5. Hey Jennifer,

That drink sounds goood! I cannot wait for our Saturday afternoons spent out of doors until late. I love hanging out in the garden, enjoy the fruit of one's labours as you have been doing. And look at you, gorgeous girl!

  10. It sounds like the perfect Saturday afternoon, Jennifer. There's something very satisfying about getting a big job like your yard work done, then sitting back and enjoying the results.

  13. Beautiful photos Jennifer. Looks as if your weather is getting better as has ours this last couple of days(though we have a way to go before we can go without a jumper).

  14. I love all the photos.. you really are getting to be an excellent photographer! I loved the one of the little flower in focus and the fuzzy background. It's super neat how much you're all enjoying your chickens. I have one suggestion, I saw that the coop floor has wire mesh, and that's good to keep out predators - but they need some dirt to dig in too. They "dust" themselves to keep mites and things off their bodies. I'm enjoying my time with my girls in Ohio!! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  16. Can I come over? Seriously, margaritas in your sunny back garden on a Saturday afternoon, that sounds so nice. It's still cool here. I was in the garden today, but with boots, two jumpers and a bodywarmer. x

  19. Your Saturday afternoons sound blissful. I love that you work so hard on your garden, it must make the relaxing time afterwards extra special. How wonderful to sit and crochet while your other half plays the guitar. And it's great to see how well your chickies are doing. Such a lovely, happy, inspirational post Jennifer. How I love your blog. CJ xx

  20. I do like a good margarita!! that sounds like a great way to spend some time after a session of working hard in the garden. Hope that the chickens can get to move into their new home full time soon and start laying some eggs as I am sure that the small bears will find that very exciting! Hope that you have a good week. xx

  21. Jennifer, pour me a glass and I'll grab a chair - you have the perfect weekend in my eyes! I promise I'll fit right in, I can sing along with the guitar, I *love* margaritas, and I live about 20 minutes from where they film Top Gear. We'd have a right fun dinner party, wouldn't we? ;-) Chrissie x ps I recently had a dinner party for some UK friends here, served a complete Mexican meal, they loved all the food save for the margaritas, I have yet to find a Brit who appreciates them...

  22. What a wonderful family time Jennifer, what absolute happiness you spread at home and here on your lovely posts, thank you! Your margaritas sound divine, relaxing, and more-ish!!
I'm glad to hear, and see, that the little chicks are doing so well under such loving care and attention from all of you! When I saw the pic of your crochet I thought you'd begun a mandala; lovely colours and work! Joy x

  24. What a great weekend! The snow here has pretty much all melted and our yard is an absolute disaster. There's been so much snow this winter that we actually have snow mold on the ground. And then because our front yard is so close to the street, the snowplow flings thousands of tiny rocks from the street into our yard when plowing during snowstorms. There's also woodchips from surrounding garden beds, dead leaves...I'm afraid Brian's got a ton of raking ahead of him. Unfortunately, I can't do any raking right now because of my rotator cuff injury. I love a good margarita in the warmer weather. My recipe is pretty much the same as yours but I don't put any simple syrup in it. And sometimes I throw the mixture in a blender with fresh strawberries. :-)

  27. Sounds fantastic Jennifer! Chooks are the best aren't they :-) On a side note Jennifer, I have been literally thinking about you all week. Why? Because I have just watched the ENTIRE Breaking Bad series from start to Season 5 Finale in less than 2 weeks and it is filmed in your neck of the woods. Oh my goodness, I feel like I know Albuquerque intimately. Did you watch it, are you a fan? Anyway, hope you have a wonderful week. Mel xxx

  28. Your Saturday afternoons sound blissful! It was quite sunny here over the weekend but not enough to wear sunhats like your children, not just yet. :) They look like they're really enjoying the chicks!

  29. I love being at home on the weekend - we always try and make sure we keep one day of it free to do just that. And although it's still chilly over here there have been one or two mild afternoons where we've been able to sit out.
I'm glad you and your family (chickens included!) are enjoying being out in the sun.

  30. Sounds like a wonderful weekend! Ours was a bit too chilly and way to windy to be outside for very long, but things are looking hopeful for this week! Your chickens are sooo cute, btw!

  32. That sounds like just about the most perfect Saturday afternoon, Jennifer! Fresh air, nice temps, chicks and kiddos -- cannot get much better!

I can't believe how much those chicks have grown. They are starting to really look like little hens.

  33. Your post just sings of spring and all the happiness of being outdoors - at last! I love the way that little daisy-like flower just pops right out at me in the second picture! It's like it is saying, "Ha! I'm here and there's nothing you can do to turn back the calendar!"
What peaceful, joyous fun to just have your well loved Bears surrounding you and enjoying life at its best!

  35. Jennifer, I am beyond excited that you got CHICKENS! I want them but my husband says no (for now). :) We do have four other pets though, so maybe in the future. But in the meantime, I can just read on how you get on and get some pointers. Your weekends sound like ours, I love nothing more than being at home, getting stuck into jobs and spending quality time together. I am so glad it is spring too. Well done for getting your garden back into shape, you'll reap the rewards now and right through to summer :)

  37. It all looks so productive but also very relaxed. And your yard looks wonderful :)

I'm rather envious, lately we seem to be living a life of pure chaos with no time to simply stop and relax. Or properly keep up with the blogs I love to read.

  38. Brilliant! I love a Saturday afternoon too. We've had to make a conscious decision to reduce the number of times we dedicate to visiting family and friends especially because we live so far away from them and it means we are spending too little time at home. We will make up for this later this spring and summer! Trying to get that balance right and am looking forward to not being afraid to kick back and relax once the jobs are done!! J9 x
