Just-right break

This week was our long-awaited spring break. I deliberately left the calendar open. We did have a few things going on: ballet class, a birthday party, dental checkups for the children. It was all about bubbles and bikes this week; the GB is now riding a bicycle all by herself! She's fearless. Her little legs are bruised and scratched but she picks herself up and keeps going. I'm really proud of her. I pulled out the bubbles this week, for the first time since last fall. I guess I forgot about them. They both love to blow bubbles and so do I! I can spend all afternoon with a bottle of bubbles. It's relaxing and I enjoy the challenge of blowing them as big as I can. I don't think you can outgrow bubbles. I can still see the baby in both of my children when we blow bubbles.

Other things we did: played with the chickens every day; made pizza; hung the hummingbird feeders and brought my birdbath out of winter storage; drew all over everything with chalk; watched animal videos on Netflix; baked a coffee cake; kicked a soccer ball at the park; listened to the GB sing "Let It Go" from Frozen about a hundred times; watched the irises grow almost before our eyes. They bickered a little but generally got along. We ate good strawberries. I drank a lot of tea. I crocheted. I sewed. I figured out how to do some things on my new phone. I went out back to watch the sunset. We mostly stayed home. It was fantastic.

Are you ready for Easter? We're ready. I have everything for the baskets. I've got all the food I need to prepare our breakfast and dinner on Sunday. We dyed eggs this afternoon. The Bear and I always make an egg hunt for the children; we'll fill our plastic eggs with jellybeans and hide them in the backyard tomorrow night. I'm looking forward to Sunday at home with my family, as well as potluck brunch and an egg hunt with friends tomorrow. It will be a lovely weekend to finish a happy, relaxing week. It was exactly the break I needed.

  1. It sounds like you had the loveliest week, Jennifer. The mountain view from your backyard is stunning! My girl loves to blow bubbles. The Easter bunny will be bringing her a new bottle on Sunday in her basket! Your pizza looks really good. I haven't made pizza in while.... soon though! Your upcoming weekend sounds really nice with a nice combination of family, friends, and good food. Enjoy the Easter holiday!

  2. Wonderfully lovely slice of life photos! And speaking of slices, I'll take one of that yummy pizza, please! :) Black olives are one of my favourite foods ever and rarely do I make homemade pizza without including them, too.

I hope you and your family have a resplendent, relaxing, beautiful Easter celebration!

    Blessings & hugs,
    ♥ Jessica

  3. I Let it go, let it go, I am one with the wind and snow....
We have the Dvd as an early Easter present, having had our 2 weeks of school break already. We have only watched it about 4 times. Not bad, considering even the 16 year old lad enjoyed it! Have a good Easter!

  6. What a lovely week. How wonderful to have hummingbirds nearby. I'd love to see a picture if you manage to take one. The chickens are looking good. We saw some on a walk we did yesterday, and the biggest boy and I stood there looking and wishing. The park space is brilliant, and what a fantastic view. It looks like you've all had a really refreshing time. I hope you enjoy the long weekend and that you all have a good Easter. CJ xx

  7. First off, I LOVE that bird bath. Spring Break has been absolutely wonderful for me as well and I am not looking forward to returning to the rat race on Monday. It looks like ya'll had a fantastic, relaxing time. Lovely images! Best wishes, Tammy

  8. Ditto Tammy's comment - that bird bath is BEAUTIFUL! And as for being visited by humming birds - that makes me think of scenes from Snow White! We've all been singing songs from Frozen too - my favourite being the snowman one - but sadly for everyone else I only know about one line from each so get through the rest of the songs by some terrible ad-libbing! Good on Girl Bear for learning to ride - I remember swelling with pride when Big Sis first took off her stabilisers. Glad you've had such a lovely break Jennifer - now go and have a wonderful Easter x Jane

  11. These chickens of yours have grown a lot! Isn't it amazing how quickly children learn to ride a bike? I think we might go out on our bikes today, just up and down the neighbourhood roads. I love easy weeks like the ones you describe. Our Spring break is equally pleasant. Enjoy the rest of the Easter weekend with your lovely family. xx

  13. The bird bath looks great, we live near hidalgo Dolores where lots if that kind of pottery us made, I may have to put a bird bath on the list if things I want from there.

    The view is lovely.

  22. Your break is just starting, and ours is nearly over! :( It sounds like you have had a lovely time, keeping busy but in a relaxing kind of way. I am very impressed that GB can ride her bike, we have struggled with my little lady! We are down to three wheels but I think we are a long way off yet! I am kind of ready for Easter, I finally started the bonnets today! I agree with you, you are never to old for bubbles! Have a great Easter Jennifer! :))

  23. It sounds like you're really enjoying this break. I think there comes a time when everyone's ready for some down time, especially after winter. I think I've mentioned before that I love your birdbath, such gorgeous colours, no wonder it gets protected over winter, you wouldn't want anything happening to that. Enjoy the rest of Easter, my little people are too big for egg hunts now, very sad.

  24. What a nice break for you and the family! Just think, summer is coming and you can have more free time. Do you home school during the summer? I know you do educational things all the time. We're pretty set for tomorrow.. I am making baked smoked ham and Gratin Dauphinoise (French for scalloped potatoes). And we got the neatest little bag of baby squash for the veg!

  39. Oh boy, I always seem to be in "catch-up" mode, Jennifer. You write such delightful posts, and I don't like to miss them but glad I can go back and read them. This sounds like an absolutely perfect Spring Break. Your talavera bird feeder is beautiful & looks very similar to my big flower pot. I adore the relationship your children have with one another -- the stories you tell always make me smile. Congrats to your daughter on learning to ride the bike! Bikes without training wheels and that first loose tooth are such biggies at this age. I cannot believe how quickly those little chickies are growing......well, I do kind of remember that they do grow very fast from when I lived on a chicken farm, but I try to forget those days! How long before they start laying?
