A crocheted facecloth for Mom

It's my firm conviction that handmade gifts are the best kind, especially when they're both attractive and useful. With this in mind, I decided to make a crocheted facecloth for my mom's Mother's Day gift this year. It's a simple gift, but also sort of a luxurious one; it's handmade, with love, and it's one of a kind, which makes it special. I used soft all-cotton yarn, to be gentle on her face, but durable and easily washed.

I'd never crocheted a facecloth before. I probably should have looked for a pattern; I might have made things easier on myself. Instead, I decided to see if I could create a solid square of my own design. Much frogging ensued. I think it came out well enough in the end, but I did have a little trouble with the joining at the end of each round. You can probably see this above, particularly in the lower right corner of the cloth. I think I know what I would do differently next time. I also realized that the white portion has two different shades to it; you can probably see this in the center part of the cloth. The color shifts slightly from a white-white to a creamier tone about four rounds out from the center. I started a new ball of yarn (the same brand and color as the first one) and they were slightly different. I was annoyed at first but it's a facecloth, it will be okay.

My mother likes soft, pastel colors, so I decided to add a little interest to the cloth with a multicolored border. I used pale pink and pale green yarn, with an additional round in white at the very edge. The outer white border is done in (US) single-crochet stitches, while the rest of the cloth is made with (US) double-crochet stitches. I think the addition of a little color looks fresh and springy, which is nice for a gift given in the merry month of May.

I thought she would enjoy a nice bar of soap to use with her facecloth and found this soap at Trader Joe's. It smells wonderful, I wish I could send you some. I might treat myself to a bar. It does smell like green tea, but also a little like almonds and maybe a bit like lemon. The color looks pretty with the facecloth too. I like it when things match, especially in gift-giving.

The facecloth made a lovely wrapping for the soap. I love to come up with creative ways to wrap a gift. I tied some pink satin ribbon around the whole thing and it made a neat little package. I mailed it to her this week, since I won't be able to see her for Mother's Day. I hope she enjoys it. I also sent a handmade card, designed by me with lots of washi tape and hand-colored rubber-stamped designs, and a letter from the small Bears with a crayoned illustration by the GB; rainbows and chickens feature prominently. I liked making the facecloth, even if it isn't perfect. I have come to accept that imperfection is just part of the making process. I have some ideas for next time and I'll check out others' patterns too. There's a whole world of crocheted cloths out there.

These are the yarns I used for this project. All are from the I Love This Cotton line, available at Hobby Lobby. I used White for the main color, with Pink and Pistache in the border. I made the facecloth with a size I hook, working fairly tightly. I did not block the facecloth, still being pretty timid about blocking anything I've made, though it would probably be a good idea to do so - something else to keep in mind for next time. I really need to bear up about this blocking thing. All in all, this was a good little project and I like my first facecloth - a simple gift created for my mother, who taught me to crochet in the first place.

  12. "Amen!" to the attitude that tastefully hand made gifts are the best of their kind! I cherish a crazy little potholder that my mother helped my daughter make when she was three. I can't even recall the purchased gifts that might have accompanied that birthday surprise many years ago.
Your facecloth is beautiful and your mom will love them and the soap too!
    Happy Mother's Day. Jennifer!

  14. It is perfectly lovely and I'm a firm believer that anything handmade doesn't have to be absolutely perfect anyways. It is the love and the thought behind it that counts the most. Ironically, I have been working up a bunch of washcloths. Bought a bunch of plant based soaps that I will be gifting to teachers and friends next week. :) Happy Mom's Day weekend. Tammy

  22. It's a lovely gift, I love the colours you used. I've been meaning to knit or crochet a face cloth for a while now but haven't got round to it yet. I do knit my dishcloths, they're so much more durable than bought ones. How lovely to wrap a gorgeous bar of soap up in the cloth, your mum will love her gift.

  23. It's really lovely, it will make a wonderful gift and I'm sure you're Mum will love it. The pastel border is perfect for spring, and who doesn't love a new bar of soap?

I've been caught out by yarn not matching in the past - even with the same brand and colour they can be so different. I became obsessed with batch/dye lot numbers from that point onwards! x

  24. What a lovely gift! I hope that your Mom loves it. It is so annoying when the yarn colour changes, it doesn't look out of place on this though as you have done increasing squares with different colours, but it is irksome isn't it. I don't suppose that your Mom will think anything of it though. Hope that the cotton yarn didn't make you too sneezy!! xx

  25. It's lovely, she'll be thrilled to receive it. I'm starting to think of that pink and green as "your" colours, they're very pretty together, they put me in mind of rosebuds. The soap sounds good. I smelt some wonderful locally made soap with rosemary in it the other day, I can't get it out of my mind. I hope you have a good weekend and a lovely Mother's Day. No doubt they will look after you! CJ xx

  26. What a lovely idea for a mother's day gift Jennifer. I very much like the colours you chose. You know, had you not mentioned the colour difference in the white centre, I would have thought it was a deliberate and well chosen change of shade! I must make something for my mum this weekend. I have given her a face cloth and soap for Christmas so maybe I need to come up with something else. I am planning to make a batch of soap and the fragrance you describe sounds just right for it. If I ever get around to making it, I will send you a bar. x

  49. I agree that homemade gifts are very special. Being homemade, we have to make allowances for little bits that didn't quite work out the way we wanted. I think it adds to their charm, and it makes the giver human like the rest of us. Your wash cloth is beautiful in the colours you chose and the pattern. I like to match up gift items too, and the soap you chose sounds wonderful (I wish I could smell it!). Your mom's going to love receiving this package of love in her mail! Wendy x
