Made for sunny days

This time, right now, is perfect. It's just hot enough outside. Everything is blooming. The yard is filled with the scent of honeysuckle day and night. I wish I could keep it like this year-round.

We hardly left our house the whole weekend. There was plenty to do around here, and we worked some. But mostly we relaxed and enjoyed the first really summery weekend of the season. We set up the kids' pool on the back patio and sat in deck chairs while they played. I crocheted rather aimlessly, a big cotton granny square. The Bear drank beer and told me hilarious stories. We admired the way our children got along in the pool, the novelty causing them to forget to argue for a little while. It's still a Very Big Deal for them to play in their plastic kiddie pool, with squirt guns and old cups and yogurt containers. When they're finished for the day, I hang their towels and swimsuits on the little clothesline at the end of the porch. I like seeing them there, it's one of those summer-only things. Do you know what I mean? There are others, in my house: iced tea in the fridge, Otter Pops in the freezer, peanut shells in the little trash bin on the patio, swim goggles and sunscreen on the kitchen counter.

We've eaten well this weekend. Friday night I made chicken fajitas, with the meat and vegetables cooked on the grill. I make a marinade with lime juice, garlic and cayenne, a recipe I found online years ago. I've never been to Chili's again. On Saturday night, I fed the small Bears scrambled eggs and made an easy late dinner for us after they went to bed. We ate Gardenburgers in pita bread with onion rings while we finished our last episode of Endeavour and started Inspector Morse, both on Netflix. We have been so taken with Endeavour the last few weeks. What a beautiful, stylishly produced show. Inspector Morse has not disappointed. Back to the food...tonight, I roasted a huge chicken. It was almost six and a half pounds, more like a small turkey. But it was close to perfect. We ate it mostly with our fingers. I've been in a remarkably good mood about cooking lately, long may it last.

Thank you for the comments on my last few posts. They've been supportive and thought-provoking. I'm glad my love for home and family come through in my posts. Welcome, new readers and followers! I am really happy you're here.

  1. It is looking very summery over there, gorgeous! Nothing like that first real summer weekend is there? Your garden is looking very pretty. Your mention of iced tea reminds me of my childhood as my Mum (American) always had that in the fridge too - it's not a very common thing here in Australia. Mel x

  3. It looks wonderful, the weather has been good here too, at that lovely stage where you can sit out & have fun. Your fajitas recipe sounds nice, I like dishes where lime juice features. After a mass planting I spent the afternoon in my garden crocheting too, have a great week.

  6. Sweet summer! I miss summers like that, never ending warmth, water and barbecues. Our summers are rather cooler and not so reliable either but we do make the most of the few hot days we get. x

  18. Hey Jennifer,
We have had a similar weekend here. Gorgeous weather, eating al fresco, a cheeky bottle of Peroni beer (my favourite) on the beach, lots of water play for Pops, the apply smell of the clematis in the garden and the buzz of pollinators. Chilled and relaxed here. So lovely that you are too. And yes, those warm weather rituals. Throwing the windows open, lighter bedding, sun lotion in the kitchen, salads and food from the grill. Heaven.

  19. Oh, this sounds like a lovely weekend Jennifer, the kind of weekend we love too. We also had a paddling pool out this weekend, the kids enjoyed it and I know what you mean about the novelty of the pool helping them to get along. We didn't have any bickering at all which was lovely to witness! Your food sounds yummy too. Have a great week. :)

  21. Loving the sound of your summery weekend Jennifer. It's amazing how much a bit of sun makes a difference to our lives. We're having a mini heatwave here too in the UK but don't think it'll last for long. seize the day is my motto.

  23. Isn't hanging out on the patio the best? My husband and I did just that last night. No little kiddies around anymore though. I get wistful and nostalgic when I see photos of little ones playing and being with their families and reading stories like yours...I wish I could bring those days back again. I guess that's why us "older folks" (I'll be 52 in August) look forward to having grandchildren. :-)

  26. Lovely sounding weekend, Jennifer. We love grilled chicken fajitas. That's what we had for dinner last night. I always have iced tea in the fridge. It's a favorite around our house! Your garden looks so beautiful! I really like your blue umbrella. I have a citron green one now, but I may go with blue or purple next time.

  30. Sounds like we had similar weekends of family and homeyness and good homemade food. Nothing better! Enjoy your kids while they still fit in a kiddy pool. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  31. Long after they could fit in it, my kids liked to drag my canning pot outside, fill it with water and creatively splash the water out so they could refill the pot and douse themselves cool in the process :)

I am imagining the smell of your honeysuckle ~~~~~~ ahhhh Spring xx

  32. I love iced tea. I remember drinking peach iced tea in new York when I was about 19 and thinking it was amazing. You can get it here, in delis, but it seems expensive. I tried to make it but it never tastes as nice. I'm glad you had such perfect weather. It's cold and grey here today - just when I get used to the sun it goes away! I'd be soooo suited to your desert climate, I'm sure... :-) xx

  33. Such perfect Summer photos and sentiments, Jennifer. It is wonderful to have the children play in a pool; the best summer activity of all, I have found. I really love your blue umbrella against the yellow wall and red flowers. Is that beautiful pottery piece a birdbath? lovely..

  38. Love how you describe those happy sunny days, the immediacy of the moments you capture....the delicious food, the children playing and time to relax...perfect. I like to notice the little summer things around too. (And we enjoyed Endeavour too, after years of enjoying Inspector Morse!)
    Happy week, Jennifer!

  40. It certainly looks like summer has arrived at the Bears. I envy you your sunshine after our horribly wet and cool week.

Glad to hear you're another fan of Endeavour and Inspector Morse. We missed the latest series of Endeavour because of being in Scotland without TV and our broadband isn't fast enough for Netflix, so we'll have to wait for the repeats. :-)
