Happenings

Joining in with my friend Annie, who shared some happenings in her own life earlier this week (including the birth of her first grandchild!). Lately, I am...

Perfecting my quiche technique. I am seriously getting good at this. My last one had asparagus, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses. It was delicious.

Sipping elderflower cordial for the first time ever. We bought a bottle of syrup concentrate at IKEA in Phoenix this winter. We're mixing it with mineral water.

Beaming with pride over my two children who have done a wonderful job in their recitals and class plays. As of yesterday at noon, we are on summer break!

Beginning to recover from the past month of endless commitments. I could sleep for a week.

Feeling more confident about the LB's medical stuff, especially a new medicine that required a huge hassle with the pharmacy and insurance coverage, but it's okay now. Phew.

Listening constantly to a new Pandora station I made just for a cappella music. Oh, it's awesome. The mash-ups are my favorite. This station reminds me of college; we had several a cappella groups and I never missed a performance. I used to try to get up the guts to try out for one of the female groups. I would make it as far as the music library to borrow sheet music for my audition before chickening out, like, six separate times. Wimp.

Celebrating our wedding anniversary this long holiday weekend. Our marriage is a teenager! How the heck did that happen?

Needing a haircut. You know Meatloaf, the singer? I think that I look like he did in the 70's when my hair gets too long and scraggly.

Picking tiny, super-sweet and flavorful strawberries from our small patch in the backyard. I noticed that one area of plants was covered over with dirt when the small Bears dug their giant hole last fall. I think I'll try to put in a few new plants next spring. I need more strawberries!

Marveling at my still-living potted basil plant. We're past a month already! I've never had basil survive this long.

Devouring books at an impressive rate. I'm not watching as much TV lately. I noticed that I was letting myself zone out too much at night. I feel a lot sharper with less TV and more books.

Wondering what kind of summer we're going to have; May has been remarkably cool and wet. I hope this is a good monsoon year. How I love my rain and thunderstorms.

Looking forward to an anniversary dinner out, sans children!

Finding myself unexpectedly entranced by hairstyle tutorial videos on YouTube. I went looking for donut-bun tutorials for the GB's ballet recital and got sucked in. They're fascinating.

Planning summer craft projects for myself and the small Bears. I have several crochet and sewing ideas for myself; we'll see how many I can get through.

Making a list of things we'd like to do in Denver next month on vacation. Would it surprise you to know that a trip to IKEA is one of my contributions?

Starting to make a Father's Day gift for the Bear; I fear I may have left it too late.

Rejoicing because I finally found some comfortable black semi-dressy summer sandals to wear with skirts, dresses and capri pants. I have so much trouble finding good shoes for myself and it doesn't help that I'm a skinflint, but the $5-flip-flops-with-everything look just wasn't working for me anymore.

Signing off...and hoping you're having a lovely weekend!

  3. Hi Jennifer ! Congratulations with your teenager-marriage :-)))) !!
I'm happy for you that the changes in LB's medications are going smoothly - always a relief when all the paperwork & insurance stuff is resolved ! (same thing here with The Hubby's cancer medication.. Always such a hassle just to be able to get medication that has been recently introduced onto the market...)
Have a great weekend, enjoy the start of summer holiday !! (And take some well deserved rest, sweetie, it doesn't benefit anybody in your family if "The Mom And Motor Of The House" is tired... If you need to sleep for a week, then sleep for a week !

Ps I really would love to see your Meatloaf hair :-))))

  4. Happy wedding anniversary! Reading of your insurance hassle over your sons medication has certainly made me thankful for the NHS. Sounds like you have lovely happenings in your life at the moment which is good. Isn't elderflower cordial glorious, I have my eye on the elder tree at the end of my lane, it's about to flower any time now so I will be out picking. Have a super week x

Maybe this will be the year that I make some myself. I'm wishing you both a very happy anniversary, and I hope you have a lovely meal out together. And I hope that you all have a wonderful summer. Glad that LBs medical/insurance problems are sorted now. I can't imagine having those issues as I'm used to the NHS. So pleased you got it sorted.

  15. Yummy looking quiche! I love elderflower cordial too - I made lots of it last year and froze it in small bottles but it's sadly all gone now. It's rather nice as a cocktail with gin and tonic! Happy anniversary! xx

  17. Happy Anniversary! Enjoy your dinner out. Your quiche looks delicious. Summer vacation, enjoy!

Books, I have been devouring them too. I have a goal of reading more fiction this year after years and years of non fiction reading. No TV here, so once the little man is tucked in I either knit or read, and lately reading is winning out :)

    Have the most wonderful weekend!

  19. Nice photos, and your quiche looks and sounds divine. I have to laugh because I know exactly what you mean about the YouTube hairstyle videos - I was trying to work out how to do a french plait once and found myself hooked. They are addictive! I hope you get to relax and rest a little over the next few weeks before your holiday. xx

  20. A lovely list of a busy life, Jennifer. Happy Anniversary and I hope you had an enjoyable dinner date together. Good point about watching too much TV; I have to monitor myself too. And I need to read more books! Love your pretty little pink flowers.

  22. As always, such lovely photos - you capture so well the beauty in the everyday.

I LOVE internet hair tutorials! Those gals always make it look so easy.

Serious basil envy here - my seedlings aren't even an inch high. I can't grow basil in pots, only in the ground, so kudos on keeping yours going!

Happy anniversary to you and Mr. Bear. :)

  24. Who can resist a trip to Ikea? I went yesterday and was very well behaved, only buying a cushion cover, some wine glasses and a note book. But my 'want' list is now a mile longer...
Happy anniversary! We are perhaps a year behind you, as our marriage just turned twelve. :)

  30. There is no way in the world you would ever look like Meatloaf Jennifer! Your quiche looks delicious, I would happily eat the hole of it. My lot don't like quiche much, which is a shame. Happy Anniversary to you and the bear. xx

  32. May's been pretty cold here too which is a bit disappointing. Fingers crossed it warms up soon...
I do love elderflower cordial and yes, it goes best with sparkling water. I made my own last summer and will be doing the same this year too.
You're similar to me; before my haircut, an a bad hair day (most of them then) I'd compare myself to Gene Simmons. And yes to Ikea - I'm going there later this week for some picture frames. No doubt there'll be many more purchases though.
Happy Anniversary to you both. Hope you enjoyed your celebratory dinner.

  34. How did I miss this post? For some reason your posts come in lower than older posts.. I have no idea why. And then I'll be scanning down my blog list and see that you'd posted but it only showed up when it was way down in the list! Argh! But now I'm caught up. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  35. I am working my way back through your posts I missed :) I enjoyed reading about your happenings and am especially glad to read that you are feeling better about LB's medical treatment and ironed out the change in medication. I haven't watched YouTube hairstyling videos, but I sure appreciate the crocheting/knitting segments that I can repeatedly play to learn new techniques. xx

  36. Congratulations on your teenage anniversary. I read your blog as and when I get the chance but I do follow you on the old instagram and love your pics. Wish that I could find the flow to blog myself but instagram and Facebook is it at the moment. Perhaps when I hit my most exciting 40th birthday next week I may get hit with a flow lol. We will see..... Have loved to read your happenings.
