This and that

I'm so glad it's Friday. I've spent the morning at home by myself, puttering. The laundry has been going since 7:30, the kitchen and bathrooms are clean and now I'm relaxing. There's something very satisfying for me in getting the housework done. I wouldn't call myself a clean freak, oh no. I'm not obsessive about cleaning or organizing, but I find a lot of balance, we'll say, in completing these tasks. Knowing they're done, knowing I could invite anyone in here most of the time and have the house be presentable at least, makes me happy. I like an orderly home, but I'm not necessarily after an immaculate one. I also have a weird thing where I truly enjoy having the washer and dryer going. It's something about the noise of it, at the back of the house in the utility room going out to the garage. It's working, getting the job done. I like the sound as much as the idea of it. The clean clothes are nice too.

We've had a hectic week and I'm relishing the quiet and solitude of my morning. The LB was back in the hospital earlier in the week for a follow-up surgery. This one was minor compared to the one he had in July, and only required a very long day in the hospital. They sent us home and we nearly ended up back in the emergency room that night. There was reason to believe that complications were arising. In the end, we didn't go. He seemed okay after a while and it was late, so we stayed home and watched him carefully. I began to think that keeping him overnight in the hospital would have been a good idea, at least that first night. He seems better now and says he feels the best he has since before the surgery in July. I think it's because the stents were removed this week; they must have been irritating. Yesterday, I watched him riding his bicycle around and around the back patio with a big grin on his face. He hadn't ridden since the beginning of July and he was so happy. He can run and jump and climb now, and I am so thrilled for him, I can't even tell you how happy it makes me to see this boy play again, and just in time for his double-digit birthday the week after next.

What do you have planned for the weekend? We're going to spend the rest of Friday at home, once I've picked up the small Bears from school this afternoon. We're ordering a pizza for dinner tonight. We have music lessons for both children tomorrow and some homeschool projects to finish in time for classroom presentations in the next couple of weeks for both of them. I plan to crochet and light my new candle, a pear-scented Yankee jar candle I bought last week. I have to buy groceries. I think we'll stick close to home otherwise, resting up after our stressful week and enjoying these last few weeks of real Indian summer weather. It almost always seems like October blows in with a storm, shrouding the mountain and leaving a glaze of white on the peaks. September is for savoring.

Thank you for your interest in a winter-project check-in! Many of you said you might be interested in participating and I'm really excited about that. I was thinking we could have them on the first weekend of each month. I'd post a link-up, as part of my own post about my winter project. The link-up would be open for a week. You can add your post to the link-up here. Any kind of project is welcome - knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, etc. I'd only ask that you link back to my post in yours, to help spread the word about the link-up; the more the merrier. Please join me for the first winter-project link-up in October!

  6. I have been reading back through your blog posts. I didn't get to read much over the summer holidays with children here so I have a beer in my hand right now and my glasses on while checking out my favourite bloggy friends. Your yarn along looks great with really mellow colour combinations. I was also really in tune with your home philosophy too - not perfection but done. That is just about right for me too! Will catch up again next week. Jo x

  7. It is wonderful to know that LB is feeling so well after all he has been through; and I am glad you are enjoying your more normal routine day, Jennifer. I like the sound of the laundry machines helping us get clean clothes, too :) I also like an excuse to cook onions; they somehow signal yummy cozy homemade meals to me. I burned the first of my pumpkin pie scented votive candles and really enjoyed their homey scent the other day. After swimming today I plan to do some speedy crochet to finish a little bib for a gift for a baby shower on Sunday. Hoping you have a happy weekend :) xx

  8. I'm thrilled for you that your little boy bear is up to riding his bike again. Pear scented Yankee candle sounds divine, I'm currently burning a cherry vanilla one & it's lovely. I went food shopping earlier on today so just fresh bread to buy on Sunday & most of my laundry is done, another load & that's it. I'm never this organised so my weekend will be crocheting after buying the boy some new shin pads. Looking forward to your yarn along. Hope you have a fab weekend x

  9. Hope you enjoyed your quiet time this morning. I love a clean and tidy home, Like you, I don't need it to be immaculate, but tidy with that lived in look is what like.

Your weekend sounds wonderful. We are having pizza tonight too, I just set the dough to rise, and the only other plans for the weekend is time in the garden, time on the trails, and a little reading and knitting here and there. So looking forward to this weekend. Enjoy yours.

  10. How wonderful to watch your wee boy enjoying being on his bike again, Jennifer. I'm so glad he's on the mend after his op this week. My plans for this weekend involve some sewing, some reading, some ironing and some baking. I hope you have a good one! :o)

  13. So glad your LB is doing better now, it must have been another stressful week for you. But how lovely to see him riding his bicycle with a smile on his face. I know exactly what you mean about the nice sound of the washing machine. I love loading mine up and switching it on and letting it do all the work. I hope you guys all have a good weekend. CJ xx

  15. I love your thoughts on your work at home; I used to be able to manage much better just getting things done but we moved into a fixer-upper three years ago with two very small kids and then had another baby the next year and it just seems like since then I haven't been able to keep on top of everything; no, scratch that, ANYthing. Except maybe laundry. I keep on top of that pretty well probably for the same reasons you described! Haha! Anyway, I aspire to have my home in good working order and updated to be really beautiful but it feels like a ways off sometimes!
I agree; September is for savoring. I hope your last weeks of summer are delightful!

  16. I'm so pleased that your son is feeling so much better. Your planned weekend sounds lovely and peaceful - we're off to yet another uni open day tomorrow; the weather forecast doesn't sound the best either. Maybe I can do a little candle lighting and crochet on Sunday. I hope your pizza was yummy. xx

  17. Oh that is good to hear. I can sense your relief at seeing your boy play in the backyard. There is always a good feeling of accomplishment when the laundry is done. Yesterday I took advantage of our wonderful weather (warm, sunny and breezy) to do three loads of washing, all line-dried, and like you I'm savouring the season. Have a great weekend Jennifer.

  18. I am SO relieved to hear that your LB is doing better. I have been praying for him. I think they send people home from the hospital way too fast sometimes...most of the time. I know I was NOT ready to be at home even after two nights after my surgery. I also think we sound much the same about our homes. My motto is...a house clean enough to welcome anyone at any time, but not so clean they can't feel comfortable putting their feet up. Dennis took a vacation day today and he cleaned the carpets in the lake trailer for me. We then spent the afternoon reading while looking over the lake. A perfect day.
    Blessings always,
    Betsy

  19. Stents out ! Yay !!! So good to hear everything went well (not considering the little "hiccup" on the evening when he came out of the hospital....), and really great to hear he now can do regular kid stuff again like cycling ! I am so happy for you and LB... But just tell him to keep calm for at least a couple of days... Better safe than sorry...

  21. Yay, chicken sighting - you know I love your chickens Jennifer. So sad to hear your LB was back in hospital this week, but also how wonderful that all is well once more and he is improving. What a Godsend that is for you all.

  22. Hi Jennifer I'm trying to catch up with everyone after my holidays, I've missed so many of your posts but have enjoyed reading back. I like the sound of the washing machine in the background too, I'm pleased your son is getting back to normal. The weather is rainy and cold today so I think I will be having a weekend at home too. :) xx

  24. I'm sorry to hear there's been another hospital visit for the LB this week but I'm so pleased that he's now feeling much better, that must feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders too. I'm just the same re housework, I like to get my jobs done first thing in the morning so that once they're finished, I know I've got the rest of the day to myself, well, apart from cooking dinner etc. Mick's out playing cricket today so Eleanor and I have the day to ourselves, she's watching a film on tv whilst I catch up with a bit of blog reading.

  25. I am glad LB is able the cycle once more, and with a big grin on his face. It makes me happy to imagine him whizzing down the road on his bike. I find housework satisfying but unfortunately I have to cram most of it into weekends now... it is not quite the same as it used to be when I was not working. I like the sound of the washer, too. Enjoy your relaxing weekend Jennifer, it is what I crave (we have two Birthday parties instead). xx

  26. These little ones never really give us much peace, seems there is something to worry about all the time. So glad your boy is back in tip top shape and has his grin back. I love a morning of solitude, I have not had one in a long while. Have a wonderful weekend,
    Meredith

  28. Sometimes it is just so nice to 'potter' as I call it but 'putter' as you call it!

So pleased to read about LB on the bike, bought a smile to my face and it must have been a huge smile on your face.

Hope you're all having a good weekend

    All the best Jan

  29. Hurrah for stent removal, what a relief, for him and you.

We were supposed to go to a big vintage steam fair today but it rained so hard. Maybe we'll get there tomorrow.

  30. I do hope LB continues to be well. Puttering is my favorite thing to do. Quiet morning here. My senior boy is still sleeping as he had a terrible migraine and couldn't move. His first missed day of school this year. Have a good Sunday.

  31. I am having a wonderful weekend with my daughter and family, they are having a stroll around the back field while I am supposed to be doing a Sunday lunch but I am sneaking a few moments on the computer to catch up. Glad to hear your son is on the mend, great news.

  32. Sorry I've been away for so long, Jennifer. It seems like I've missed some important events in your family. I hope LB is recovering well - it's a horrible feeling when our little ones are unwell. Sending big hugs to you all from across the water.

  33. We've both had difficult summers..I'm glad LB is on the mend now. It's so good when they're able to get back to normal. Now we're back in our school time routine too. It'll be strange next week as it'll be the first time in ages it'll just be LittleR and me during the day! I love a bit of a potter - getting stuff done and mooching around. Have a lovely week xx

  34. So sorry to hear your little guy had to have another surgery and that you almost had to go to the ER...but happy news to hear he's recovered so well and is out playing and climbing. We had a long weekend of putting the house back together and cleaning since hardwood floors were installed in our master bedroom, but now we're off for a little getaway to celebrate our 31st anniversary. :-)

  35. You sound contented Jennifer. I too, like to get jobs out of the way, and like my house to be presentable. Very often it isn't even that, and that is inevitably when someone upturns up at the door unexpectedly. At that point I remind myself that they are here for a warm welcome, not to see an tidy house, and I sweep the laundry off the the kitchen table, move the pile of books and magazines off a chair, fish two clean cups out of the dishwasher and get the kettle on. Delighted to hear your small bear is improving and cycling again, you must feel so happy to see him playing again. I like the sound of the washing machine and dishwasher too, but especially the sound of the dryer! X
