Each and every

This time is golden, bright and sweet. The weather is perfect, exactly the way I like it, with mild days and chilly nights. The whole world is lighting up with the colors of autumn. My children are in another sweet spot, one of those brief moments in time where they are calm, peaceful, playful, easy. I feel good. There is good all around and I'm doing the best I can to hold on, to capture each and every moment in my mind and heart.

We're enjoying all the things that autumn has to offer. We're cooking more (the Bear made butternut squash soup in the pressure cooker, which I'm too scared to use, and it was so delicious). I've been crocheting a lot, and cutting up fabric with no real plan in mind but immensely enjoying the cutting. The cozy times at home are back, and you know how much I adore being cozy. The Balloon Fiesta is on right now and that's always a thrill. The small Bears saw a zebra-shaped balloon, belonging to their classmate's family, land in the dirt lot next to their school. It was a planned landing and the whole school was there to greet Mr. Z, the balloon, and his balloonist, Mr. W.

Now we're on fall break and we're so relieved to take a well-earned break. We had another ballooning adventure this morning! We watched one land in a city park and some of us got to help pack it up. I'll tell you more about that soon. We have a quiet weekend planned for ourselves - workshop work, housework, yard work...but not schoolwork!

Thank you so much for joining in with my Winter Project Link Party! I'm so excited about it and I really hope you find it fun and supportive as you work through your projects this winter. The October link-up is now closed, but there will be a new one at the beginning of November, so please remember to link up then.

Thanks too for all the lovely comments you've left lately; I'm so glad you like my chevron cowl and I hope you'll make your own. It's easy and pleasant, you won't be disappointed. A big hello and welcome to new readers and followers; I'm so happy you're here!

  1. It all sounds wonderful.
After seeing your chevron and found myself watching You Tube videos to learn to crochet, I think it might be time.
    Enjoy the weekend.

  5. Hi Jennifer! I love this warm and cozy post. This is such a beautiful time of year. I'm actually sipping a cup of chai tea (my favorite fall tea) and eating a pumpkin cream cheese muffin as I read. GB looks so adorable with her missing front teeth. Our daughters are about six months apart, and I agree that this is such a wonderful age. My daughter seems to be maturing so much lately. Just wondering where your dining table and chairs are from? I'm looking for a new set.

    1. Hi Julia! Thank you. The dining table and chairs are from Ikea. We bought them for our kitchen this summer when we went to Denver on vacation and hauled them home with us. It's a Bjursta square (expandable) table with Ingolf chairs. The dark chairs in the photo are actually part of my dining room set, which is also from Ikea, but is probably 20 years old (we bought the set secondhand). Hope that helps. :)

  6. Your pictures really convey the bright golden sweetness! Your table is especially inviting, especially as I imagine the soup and cookies migrating downward onto it. :-)

  8. Enjoy your fall break, Jennifer. The cookies and the soup look delicious. Pressure cookers scare me too, I've never owned one but I remember my mum using one all the time, all that hissing and fizzing, give me a slow cooker any day.

  15. So many lovely photos. I love butternut squash soup - the Covent Garden Soup book has a recipe for squash and sweet potato with chilli and smoked paprika; so warming and yummy. Your cookies look great too - mine usually end up spreading to form one giant mega-cookie! Enjoy your autumn break. xx

  16. Sounds like you're whole family are embracing autumn, I do like this time of year. I like what nature does, the show it puts on for us, how we change our eating habits, the salads are being replaced by soups...and I love snuggling under my blankets, whilst I make another! :) xxx

  24. Terrific post, Jennifer, and I'm so glad for you that you are experiencing one of those golden moments of parenting, and of life. I hadn't read the rules for the Winter Project Party carefully, so missed the fact that there was a cut-off date. I'll try again in November! :-)

  26. Yum, your cookies look delicious. Your children seem very musical, I think it's a lovely thing being able to play an instrument. Daniel was never bothered to learn, though he did have a go at the violin when he was in his last year at primary school. Eleanor was always more interested in her singing, but she's picked up a bit of guitar and piano herself. Enjoy the school break, I'm sure you're all ready for it.

  27. Your post sounded like poetry at the beginning, lovely. Times to make happy memories. I'm too scared to use a pressure cooker too, I think it is the memory of Mum hustling us all out the kitchen saying 'quick, it's going to blow!!'

  28. Happy School Break! I'm so glad you are enjoying Autumn...me, too! Last night I made bean soup and cornbread and a green salad with pear tomatoes from our kind neighbor's garden. I love the pictures I have seen of your balloon festival, and I'm glad you and yours get some up close and personal involvement in it. The bear's squash soup looks so good...perhaps I will make some soon! xx

  29. I love hearing about your wonderful sense of well-being and that you recognize it and appreciate it. So many people don't see it when it's right in front of their nose. I'm also enjoying the coziness of a cloudy cool misty day. We've had sooooooo many sunny days this year it's just plain weird. Enjoy! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  31. These family posts always remind me of when my children were a similar age to yours. I see a photo of your son and see my thoughtful, artistic and musical son. And I see your daughter and I see my singing and dancing daughter. It is, as others have said, a wonderful window into your world. Thanks Jennifer. Oh and the soup looks completely delicious.

  33. Good for you, Jennifer, that you realize the importance of savoring these special times, big or small. They can often seem elusive, but they are there, just the same. Hope you have a wonderful calm and peaceful family weekend.

  34. Mmmm. That soup looks delicious and may I please have a cookie? :-). I'm also enjoying our cool nights and warm days up here in the north. We love to sleep with the windows wide open, snuggled under our IKEA down comforter. We closed up the trailer today...a bittersweet time with our camping friends. It's the true end of the season and it means fall is definitely here in our lives. Enjoy your break.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  40. Enjoyed my first-time visit to your blog.

I noticed you mention that you enjoy cutting fabric. Interesting, because I like using scissors to cut things too. I love cutting paper, and it reminds me of being a child when we used to cut out doll clothes (paper and fabric) and cutting out shapes in school. It was one of my favourite things as a child, and I still love it.

Snip, snip, snip ... such simple, satisfactory pleasures of life.

Wishing you glimpses of heaven in unexpected places...
    Brenda

  42. Our weather has been perfect here too, with warm(ish) sunny days and cool nights. Though I think this is the last of it. Starting Friday night, we're supposed to have our first frost as it's going down to 30F! :-(

Love all your photos, but my favorite is the one with your little girl sitting on the couch with her guitar. Just precious.
