Leaf and sky

Oh, glorious October! It seems like the whole world consists of nothing but brightly burnished trees and wide-open blue skies. Inside, the light is all changing angles and unexpectedly lit corners. Outside the back windows: golden locusts lining the north side of the arroyo as far as I can see, to where it bends under the road behind it. Outside the front window: golden olive tree glowing brighter throughout the day as the sun moves around it. The weather has been just about perfect; this is the nicest fall we've had in a few years. The afternoons are warm and bright, the nights properly chilly. We haven't had unnatural heat this fall, just pleasant warmth you can enjoy all the more because you can tell that it's fleeting. There isn't that no-end-in-sight feeling to the heat that we sometimes have, just a sense of needing to appreciate the nice days while they last, which is exactly how I want my autumn to feel.

Life has been a little difficult in general these past couple of weeks, in spite of the loveliness outdoors. There have been medical appointments with somewhat concerning news, an extracurricular activity scheduling change and a change at school to get used to, a not-unexpected but still very sad death in the extended family, and a miserable, lingering cold that we've all suffered through. We had fall break last week, but very little fun happened; we were all feeling too poorly. I barely left the house all week, preferring to take it easy on the couch or in bed, whenever I wasn't helping some other poor sick soul. Tomorrow, I'll be having some (minor) dental work and consequently, my anxiety is (irrationally) through the roof.

On the positive side, I've continued my run of unusually good library books, I found out that Amazon Prime carries both The Cosby Show and Roseanne in their streaming offerings (great for convalescing), and I've been able to make very good progress on Maybelle - I'm now more than halfway through joining the squares. I'm really excited about that. To celebrate my survival at the dentist, I plan to order Chinese food on Saturday night for our at-home date. I'm going to bake a pumpkin pie this weekend too. We have big plans for Halloween, it's all in the works!

Oh, and I bit the bullet and made a reservation for Thanksgiving dinner in a restaurant this year. YES. I wouldn't do this ordinarily, preferring to make the whole huge meal myself, but this year my birthday falls on Thanksgiving Day for the first time in eleven years (I was also born on the big day), and I'd rather not do all that work on my own birthday. I'm also just looking forward to doing something different for the holiday. My family doesn't mind either way. Sometimes you just have take what you want for yourself.

I have to get going now, need to pick up a library book before I pick up the children at school. I hope you're doing well and enjoying a fall break if you're having one where you are. Have a good weekend!

  2. Trying times. I'm very sorry to hear about the bereavement and hope that the medical issue gets straightened out. I think you definitely deserve a meal out for Thanksgiving after everything you've been going through, not to mention it being your birthday on that day too. Hope you're all feeling much better very soon.

  3. Maybelle is looking very lovely Jennifer. I'm so sorry to hear about the trying weeks you've had. I'll be praying about the medical concerns and your dental appointment. Hoping that the lingering cold is all gone now and brighter days are ahead for all of you. I'm not cooking Thanksgiving either, at least not all of it. We've been invited to some sweet friends home in central Washington for the day. I know I'll contribute some of the dishes but I won't have the responsibilty for all of them. Now we're hoping for no snow for traveling. :-) Many blessings on your sweet family Jennifer.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  8. You write so beautifully about Autumn Jennifer - your favourite season, and mine too. I am secretly hoping some vestiges of Fall colour remain when we set foot in Nth America in early December. So sorry to hear of your family ills, and family loss. You deserve the treat of Thanksgiving at a restaurant. It will be a lovely birthday. Love that you have a red rug soooo similar to mine - Twins!!

  9. Sorry you've been unwell, and the family too, that's so hard. Takes longer to get well when we're taking care of others.

Anyway, I was born on the day too, and mine fell on Thanksgiving last year. So, you must celebrate one day ahead of me. :)

  12. Sorry to hear things haven't been great the past couple of weeks, sorry for the loss of your family member too.

The word glowing is exactly right for the colours at this time of year, it's so grey here yet I can see purple and orange flowers glowing through the gloom this morning.

  14. Sorry things have all been against you recently Jennifer. I do hope as you feel better things get easier for you. I like you coping strategy with the dentist - think of the next thing you'll do after the thing you don't wish to do. That's exactly what I do to cope. It doesn't have to be a treat, just something to convince yourself you're not going to be stuck there forever.
Love reading your blog and seeing your photos, have a nice weekend, Cathy x

  16. I hope things will pick up for you now that the holiday season is around the corner. I hope that you survived your dental appointment too ;-D. Sounds like a good plan for Thanksgiving too. (Oh, and I think we have the exact same tile -- I hope you like it more than I do -- I get tired of cleaning the dirt out of those little dimples ;-8)

  17. Sending you lots of well wishes Jennifer. Sometimes we seem to go through these difficult patches and the whole family catches colds at once. Hope your dental work was ok...not a nice experience either. Your plans for Thanksgiving sound very sensible. It is so easy to wear yourself out and wise to find ways to counteract that....especially on your birthday! Xox

  18. I'm sorry you've had such a tough few weeks, it sounds grim but I'm glad the weather is beautiful. Good on you, booking dinner out on Thanksgiving. What a very good idea. I found the Gilmore Girls great for convalescing. :-)

  19. Am late in chiming in, but still am sorry for the grim times you have had. At least the weather has been pretty. Sarah's second birthday is on Thanksgiving this year, as well! Your idea to go out to eat sounds like fun, and I hope you have a happy celebration. xx

  20. I'm glad you're enjoying the fall weather Jennifer (sorry this is late!). We have just yesterday dipped down to single digits (C) for temperatures, and it's actually a relief. Everyone has been in shorts and t-shirts up until two days ago. There are still some diehards walking around in shorts even today, but they look cold! I hope your household felt better for the fall break ... sounds like it came just at the right time for you. By now I'm sure your routine is back to normal.
